The Gateway to Gardening program was established in May 2022 to provide
an educational and community-focused component of Long Beach Organic,
Inc. Through generous funding support from the Munzer Foundation, LBO
has been able to maintain a commitment to provide regular, free education
and garden-based activity programming for children and adults in the greater
Long Beach community. Our program goals continue to include providing
regular free classes and events in our gardens annually and to have the
necessary resources and supports in place to be able to provide community
access to our safe, accessible and verdant green space at the Zaferia Junction
Community Garden at designated times throughout the year.

Location: Long Beach Organic community gardens (throughout Long Beach)
Pay Rate: $22 per hour.   This position is grant funded. 
Hours: 20 hrs per month
Reports to: Garden Director

Summary:  Under the direction of the Garden Director the Gateway to Gardening Coordinator will establish, oversee, and coordinate services as outlined by the program initiatives to successfully operate the Gateway to Gardening Program across eight community gardens in Long Beach.

Essential duties and responsibilities

Administrative
  • Manage communication, vendor coordination, event schedule, and post-event feedback assessments for all Gateway to Gardening Events 
  • Facilitate event cleanup, and support proper maintenance of garden and event spaces 
  • Distribute and oversee event registration, waiver forms, attendance recordkeeping, volunteers, and health and safety protocols for Gateway to Gardening events
  • Manage program outreach utilizing social media, Zeffy, and surveys
  • Oversee maintenance, purchasing and care for program supplies and materials
  • Identify areas for improvement and implement more effective processes for future events 
  • Train and manage one intern for the purposes of supporting arts related work, including event documentation, advertisement, and event design
  • Occasionally collaborate on grant funding requests and fundraising events, providing details on supplies, events, or other support needs 
  • Oversee measurement of goals with monthly and annual reporting 
  • Coordinate with Garden Director bi-weekly

Outreach and Engagement 
  • Coordinate and conduct community education events in coordination with grant objectives; not limited to field trips, tours, workshops, volunteer events, and classes
  • Coordinate with master gardeners collective, LBO gardeners, and local businesses to provide education on gardening, nutrition, health principles, art and other topics relevant to the program initiatives
  • Support the Long Beach Organic Garden Director in hosting community education events, as needed

Required Qualifications
  • Effective organization, time management, and communication skills
  • Reliable transportation to events and work locations (can include different modalities, including walking, biking, and public transit)
  • Punctual attendance

Preferred Qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge of gardening, garden maintenance, nutrition and preparation of fresh produce
  • At least two years of experience working in education, science communication, environmental education, or non-profit support 
  • Education experience related to communication, education, environmental science, or similar is preferred 
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as with a team 
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and ages preferred
  • Computer experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office products and Google Documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Forms, etc), social media, Zeffy, Surveys

Working Conditions
This position may require flexible hours, including working occasionally after hours, evenings, and weekends. 
The (open position) is a hybrid on site and remote work environment.  On site responsibilities will require being outdoors, with exposure to all weather elements and often in full sun.  This position works closely with materials that may cause allergic reactions, particularly to dust, soil, fertilizer, compost, pollen, plant materials, animals and insects.  Must be familiar with and able to use garden tools and equipment. Ability to lift and move heavy objects (50lbs or more), climb ladders, and additional manual labor may be required (obtain HR Consultant Guidance).
